When first introduced in the year 2005, people knew the test as the citizenship test because it was a test taken by people residing in the UK to acquire permanent citizenship of the place. The test was also referred by some as the Britishness test, as it was intended for people trying to become British. But in 2007 the government finally named it as the Life in the UK test for immigrants who wished to acquire permanent British Citizenship.
Any person who applies for the test for permanent citizenship of the UK after 2nd April 2007 is intended to take and qualify the test. Passing the test is mandatory to acquire citizenship, even if the person has cleared all the other requirements.
